More and more family researchers are publishing their family trees on TribalPages, rather than duplicate their 'efforts' on our site we have provided links, where appropriate, to that more detailed research for a particular family line.

If you would like a link added to your tree please contact the webmaster of this site. Monday, February 20th 1860 Marriage of Joseph Burrowes & Johanna O'Halloran

The Marriage Certificate for Joseph Burrowes & Johanna O'Halloran shows they were married on 20th February 1860 at St. John The Baptist's Church, O'Brien's Bridge (now Glenorchy), Tas, Australia, by the Rev. George Hunter (by Licence). The Marriage was solemnized according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Catholic Church. Witnesses were Patrick Murphy and Honora Curtin. The marriage certificate shows he was 26 and she 39 years of age. Official records also indicate they were married at St. John's United Church of England & Ireland, Newtown, Tas., on the same day, possibly by Thomas J. Ewing who is known to have been St. John's Minister at that time. The document sent later, on the April 30th 1860, for government registration of the marriage was a transcription of the Parish Register by Ewing, and he has the ages showing she 26 and he 39 years of age. The Tasmanian Pioneer Index did show two marriages in 1860 and in 1861, but this has been correct. However, the year is now shown as 1861, so if you are looking for the St. John The Baptist's Church, O'Brien's Bridge marriage it is in the 1861 section of the film. [We'll try to have this noted on the Tas OA site.] We explored taking the ages on their marriage certificate as being correct (not reversed as Ewing has transcribed it), and researched the possibility that Joseph Burrows was a convict (#22003) who was transported to van Demons Land in 1850. Court record show him as Joseph 'The Younger'. He was sentenced in Dorset (Dorchester) Quarter Session to 10 years for stealing a pair of boots from M. Marshall at Wareham. There is more detail on his page! Johanna Burrows nee O'Halloran has proven to be very interesting ... Johanna's husband's Death Certificate shows he died on Monday, October 24th 1862 in Melbourne Hospital of a "Disease of the Brain" [So it seem very unlikely that he was the convict Joseph 'The Younger' - we are now left with the search for his immigration record into the colonies.] Joseph's Death Certificate has now been included on his page, and shows he was from Derby, England, and died aged 38 - so we are assuming a birth year of 1824. This means he was 36 yo when married - not 26 or 39 yo. Johanna immigration records show she was 24 yo in 1854. This means she was about 29 yo when married - not 26 or 39 yo. [I think we may have a slightly deaf Minister and a very strong Irish accent distorting the official records - this is further illustrated with Joseph's death certificate - it has his wife as 'Joanna O'Hullorn'. Try saying 29 and 39, 26 and 36, and Johanna O'Halloran, with a strong Irish accent. ... You'll see what I mean.] Some Links to Useful Sites have been included in the page left margin, as well as some links to related family tree sites. [Many are locked so you will have to ask their owner for the key!] Many of the Family have have sent interesting photographs and documents, and these are loaded into the site when time permits. Please send photos on CD by post to postal address P.O. Box 168, East Melbourne VIC 8002, or email them to me. We began this family history site when we learnt that many family members have manually created family trees. It is hoped that this web media - familiar to the younger generation - will kindle a new interest in Our Family of Australian Settlers & Pioneers, with more research into Our Family. If you have a computer based family tree (and hence a GEDCOM file) we welcome its inclusion on the site, also. If you or a loved one is not shown on the site, it simply means the webmaster does not have the information, or has not had the time to enter the information - bearing in mind though, only the birth year for people living is shown. Many thanks to family members who assisted with information. Additions or corrections are welcome, and we also welcome your assistance; if you have the time please add your family. All are welcome to contribute and make corrections, add new names and additional information about existing names, add images of letters, photos, newspaper clippings, etc. You can contact the webmaster at the above address to email the information, or post (snail mail) the information on CD. We are indebted to the late Leila and Frank Hanley for their work in researching and compiling the "FAMILY TREE OF CALVER / WILLIAMS & HARMAN / JACK", Dec 1987. They accompanied their research with the note: "Some birth dates may not be accurate to the year, especially those noted from death certificates, as persons giving information at the time of death do not always know exact date, also depending on the month of the event, birth year could be indexed one year out." Our thanks also goes to Pat Wade who has provided much of the Aitken tree information, along with photos and historical documents. To assist fellow researchers, this site has (in general) included an estimated birth date were no actual date is available. These dates are rounded to the nearest 5 years, and are based on the spouse's, parents', sibbling's or children's birth date (in the first instance, or if not available, other information which may assist an intellegent guess). An allowance of 30 years between generations is used - so if the father was born in 1758, the spouse will be estimated as born in 1760 and ALL the children will be estimated as born in 1790. This means that when using the estimated dates for searching other records, an allowance of at least +/- 5 years is applicable. Similarly, when a birth or death place can reasonable be assumed to be in a Country (or State) these will be shown. So if the parents lived prior to 1900 (when international travel became readily available) and were born and died in Scotland, it can reasonable be assumed that the children were born in Scotland.
